Shona

I have been a musician since the age of eight but I only really started to take singing seriously from the age of 14. I began by covering well known pop songs and posting them on YouTube (in secret at first!) before beginning to write my own original music. As my confidence began to grow, I then started to perform locally while still at school, before going on to study music at Newcastle University where I regularly performed with the Newcastle University Jazz Orchestra, which I thoroughly enjoyed and it also gave me a great amount of experience.

Over the past 5 years I have had a lot of my original music played on BBC Introducing shows in York and North Yorkshire, Tees, Tyne and Wear and West Yorkshire. I have also played at various weddings and events at some truly beautiful venues such as Alnwick Castle, Wylam Brewery and Gisborough Hall to name a few. Whilst growing up I listened to a real mixture of classical, folk and pop music but began to develop a keen interest in jazz at university, after playing with the Jazz Orchestra on a regular basis. My original music now tends to combine all of these genres but I try to add my own jazz and soul style when playing and singing covers of modern pop songs.

Alongside my day job and my music projects, I teach piano, violin and singing lessons in and around Yorkshire but mainly Leeds. I absolutely love this, as it pushes me to further my own musical development and I truly love seeing the progress my students make as performers and when creating their own material. In my spare time I also love going to gigs and being inspired by fellow musicians and songwriters, both well-known and yet to be discovered.
